While being a global leader in agriculture, Brazil faces significant challenges: Large pastures are degraded and illegal deforestation continues in the Amazon. To address this, the government has adopted a policy to halt new forest clearing and restore degraded land, turning it back into productive farmland for sustainable food production.
In March 2025, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture signed a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation in the areas of the recovery of degraded pasture/farmland in Brazil.
In April 2025, a cooperation project was launched with Japanese companies and both governments. At a model farm, we are testing ways to restore degraded soil and increase productivity. Japanese companies are supplying bio-stimulants and soil amendments to improve soil health and yields.
This seminar will present the project’s initial results and materials. A panel discussion with representatives from both governments and companies will explore how to build a sustainable food system in Brazil, focusing on land restoration.

Session Summary
The Brazilian government is promoting the restoration of degraded pastures as a key policy to curb new deforestation and achieve sustainable food production.
In March 2025, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), and Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), and Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming (MDA) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for a Model Demonstration Project on Degraded Pasture Restoration. Based on this LOI, MAFF launched a cultivation demonstration project in Brazil in April of the same year utilizing biostimulant products developed by Japanese companies to restore degraded pastures, aiming to simultaneously enhance agricultural productivity and ensure sustainability.
At this seminar, the results of the demonstration were presented, and the biostimulant products were introduced, while also fostering discussions on sustainable agriculture in Brazil. The Brazilian government expressed its expectations for the technologies and products provided by Japanese companies, as well as for further strengthening cooperation between Japan and Brazil.
