As we enter an era of climate crisis, large-scale meteorological disasters are occurring worldwide. As seen in discussions under the Kyoto Protocol, REDD-plus, and the Paris Agreement, forests are expected to mitigate climate change by absorbing atmospheric carbon. Simultaneously, as the impacts of climate change become more apparent, expectation toward their role is growing in adaptation, such as disaster risk reduction. This seminar aims to bring together speakers from international organizations, policymakers, NGOs, and research institutions to discuss the roles forests can play in the era of climate crisis, focusing on the perspectives of forest conservation and utilization.

Session Summary
As we enter the era of the climate crisis, large-scale meteorological disasters are occurring worldwide. As being discussed under the Kyoto Protocol, REDD+, and the Paris Agreement, forests are expected to mitigate climate change through CO2 absorption. Simultaneously, as the impacts of climate change become more apparent, expectations are growing for their role in adaptation as well, such as disaster risk reduction.
This seminar featured opening remarks by Deputy Director General of the Forestry Agency of Japan and a video message from the Executive Director of ITTO. Subsequently, representatives from Embrapa, REFACOF, the Forestry Agency, and the FFPRI shared their respective initiatives addressing the roles forests can play in climate crisis.
A panel discussion among the speakers followed, addressing climate change mitigation, including REDD+, approaches to climate change adaptation utilizing forest functions, and how the rights of local communities and biodiversity should be protected within such initiatives.
