Indonesia and Japan are pivotal actors in shaping Asia’s clean energy future. Through the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), both countries have committed to accelerating substantial actions toward Net Zero emissions by fostering inclusive, technology-driven, and investment-ready solutions. Additionally, a total of 175 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed for decarbonization projects. This seminar serves as a high-level platform to reinforce bilateral cooperation, spotlight flagship initiatives, and align strategic priorities across government, industry, and development partners.
The dialogue will explore the achievements of decarbonization projects under the AZEC mechanism, not only in terms of project implementation, but also as a policy accelerator - driving regulatory reform, intra-island power integration, and the mobilization of climate finance. It will underscore Indonesia’s role as a regional leader in the energy transition and its efforts to localize global best practices, including through the RUPTL, the coal phase-out roadmap, and just transition frameworks.

Session Summary
Indonesia and Japan are promoting diverse technologies and financing through cooperation under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), accelerating actions toward achieving Net-Zero in a way that is both practical and tailored to the circumstances of each country.
In this seminar, a panel discussion was held with public and private stakeholders from both Japan and Indonesia to discuss efforts toward achieving Indonesia’s Net-Zero target, challenges in implementing projects, and the future direction of AZEC.
Mr. KIHARA, Director General for Energy and Environmental Policy of METI, introduced the significance of AZEC in advancing a practical energy transition through Japan’s diverse technologies and support from related organizations. Meanwhile, Mr. Guntur from Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs expressed expectations for financing and capacity building for the introduction of new technologies through AZEC, and highlighted future areas of cooperation such as geothermal energy, nuclear power, and transmission sectors including grids.
