Transformative Industry -Partnerships for Decarbonizing Chemical / Petrochemical Industries

Organizer : United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Technology Executive Committee (UNFCCC TEC)

Co-organizer : United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) ・Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)

Abstract

The industrial sector holds a tremendous potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as it is directly and indirectly responsible for about 34 % of global GHG emissions. Notably, the three primary sectors, steel, cement and chemicals & petrochemicals, collectively referred to as hard-to-abate industries, are pivotal in this context as they are responsible for nearly 60 % of total industrial energy consumption and contribute to around 70 % of the sector’s emissions. Chemical and Petrochemical industries release significant process emissions, requiring innovative solutions such as using decarbonized hydrogen and derivative products as feedstocks, circular carbon utilization and storage, and electrification of chemical processes.
The objectives of this seminar is to inform countries on technology and policy options for hard-to-abate industries by:
• Raising awareness of importance of industrial decarbonisation
• Sharing policy and technology options and showcasing innovation
• Fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships
