Nature-based Solutions (NbS) aim to address social challenges by harnessing the functions of sound natural ecosystems. NbS can provide integrated approaches that deliver cross-sectoral benefits, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction, resource circulation, revitalization of regional economies, management of zoonoses, and human health. They encompass measures such as green infrastructure and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA).
NbS are expected to serve as integrated solutions for overcoming the three global crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, and international efforts including the UNEA6 synergy resolution are calling for further promotion of collective action. Actively positioning initiatives within the framework of NbS is crucial for fostering social understanding and advancing collaboration and partnerships.
This seminar will feature prominent examples of NbS, share challenges identified through practical implementation, and discuss key elements needed for the sustainable deployment of NbS, including the applicability of practices across different regions.

Session Summary
At the seminar, speakers from government, international NGOs, and the private sector discussed key elements for the sustainable implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
Participants noted that, although NbS with synergistic effects are widely recognized as effective, quantitative evaluation methods remain under development due to the diversity of ecosystems and the time required to establish appropriate indicators.
The discussion also underscored the importance of institutional frameworks and technical guidelines to secure synergies and ensure proper project implementation. Improving local livelihoods through the sustainable use of natural resources—such as agriculture, fisheries, and ecotourism—was highlighted as critical for managing restored ecosystems and strengthening adaptation capacity in vulnerable communities.
In closing remarks, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment expressed its intention to continue advancing such synergies and suggested that linking NbS initiatives with upstream support in supply chains could help generate stronger incentives for Japanese companies.
