Nature on Balance Sheet -Process and Roadmap-

Organizer : Ministry of Environment, Japan (MOEJ)

Co-organizer : Center for Global Commons (CGC), Institute for Future Initiatives, University of Tokyo

Abstract

In order to halt and reverse nature loss and strengthen economic and ecosystem resilience, a fundamental transformation of the social and economic system is required where natural capital is recognized as a driver for economic growth and an asset on our balance sheets. To accelerate this transformation, it is critical to reflect the voices of Asia and the Global South in the standardization of international rulemaking. Building on the results of the projects implemented by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the University of Tokyo Center for Global Commons, this seminar will discuss the process and roadmap to make natural capital counted for all levels of economic decision making and disseminate the discussion to a wider international community.

Session Summary

To integrate natural capital into the economic system and accelerate the transition to a nature-positive society, it is essential to create a framework where preservation and regeneration of ecosystems are regarded as "investments” that increase corporate value and lead to economic growth. This seminar discussed the roles and challenges for each participant in formulating international rules to put nature on balance sheets and its roadmap. Speakers included CEOs from Japanese companies, scientist from Brazil, NGO, and a think tank who shared practical experience as forest asset owners, latest scientific findings on the Amazon ecosystem, and approaches to linking social and economic systems with natural capital valuation. These speakers shared a veiw that voices from Asia and the Global South should be amplified in the acceleration of international rule-making to integrate natural capital into economic and financial system. The seminar served as an important step for future policy formulation and international cooperation in natural capital valuation.
