While being a global leader in agriculture, Brazil faces significant challenges: Large pastures are degraded and illegal deforestation continues in the Amazon. To address this, the government has adopted a policy to halt new forest clearing and restore degraded land, turning it back into productive farmland for sustainable food production.
In March 2025, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture signed a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation in the areas of the recovery of degraded pasture/farmland in Brazil.
In April 2025, a cooperation project was launched with Japanese companies and both governments. At a model farm, we are testing ways to restore degraded soil and increase productivity. Japanese companies are supplying bio-stimulants and soil amendments to improve soil health and yields.
This seminar will present the project’s initial results and materials. A panel discussion with representatives from both governments and companies will explore how to build a sustainable food system in Brazil, focusing on land restoration.
